Specialty Ceremonies

Many weddings also include customs that reflect the beliefs, values and personality of the couple. Some common additions include:

Blessing: A blessing to the couple can be offered by the minister or a member of the wedding party. Blessings can be religious or secular.

Charge to the Couple: Similar to the Declaration of Intent, a Charge has the minister emphasize the gravity of the marital contract to the couple. It is often punctuated by acknowledgements such as, “I agree, “or, “I understand.”

Giving of the Bride: The minister asks, “who gives the bride in marriage?” Traditionally, the father and/or mother of the bride reply.

Prayer: Many religious ceremonies include a prayer led by the minister.

Readings: Poems, religious texts, and/or literary passages can be read by the minister or members of the wedding party.

Sermon: Many religious ceremonies include a sermon given by the minister.

Unity Candle Ceremony: A Unity Candle Ceremony involves the ceremonial merging of the flames. Two candles are lit, then the couple joins their individual flames together to light a third candle (representing two lives joined as one). Variations include participation from family, such as candles for children to join in the union of the new family.

Sand Ceremony: Sand Ceremonies are a variation of the unity candle ceremony. Two vessels of sand are poured together, mixing the sand. Each grain of sand is representative of a thought, feeling, or experience. A common variation is to give each member of the wedding party a small pebble. Each person offers a blessing as a they deposit their pebble into the containers, which the couple uses to combine their sand.

Anniversary Sand Ceremony (Beach Sand Ceremony): The Anniversary sand ceremony is a great addition to any beach wedding or elopement. Prior to the ceremony, the Bride and Groom both write a small love letter to the other. Then at the ceremony, they place a handful of sand from under their feet into the jar. The very sand they took their vows in is now in the jar! They then add the love letters. On their anniversary, they open the jar, and read their love letters! Some couples choose to leave out the love letters making it a beach sand ceremony!

Rose Ceremony: The rose is a considered a symbol of love. In this ceremony love, especially within a marriage, is defined and explained.

Handfasting: This ceremony is a common element in many modern-day Celtic, Irish and Pagan or Wiccan weddings. It features the couple joining their hands together as the minister wraps a ribbon or cord around the joined hands. It is a traditional way of showing the couple's commitment for each other, and it is common for the couple to share their vows while their hands are tied together.
